What is Project C.A.R.L? It's a ragdoll physics and injury-simulation sandbox by CarlRagdoll, made in Unity. You test weapons and drops on C.A.R.L, a lab test subject with a full skeleton, organs and blood simulation, so every reaction is different. The demo is free and Windows-only. Download it only from the official itch.io page. There's no official browser version, and the game is for older players because it shows blood and guns.

How to download Project C.A.R.L safely
- Open the official itch.io page and click Download Now.
- If a payment box appears, you can skip it and go straight to the downloads, or tip the developer.
- Download carl-windows-demo.zip (about 43 MB).
- Right-click the .zip, choose Extract All, open the folder and run the game's .exe. If Windows SmartScreen warns you, choose More info → Run anyway only for the file you got from the official page.
Avoid "play online" or "unblocked" copies. They aren't made by the developer, can be outdated or modified, and the real game can't run in a browser anyway. The official download is the only one that gets fixes.
What's in the demo
| Part | What you get |
|---|---|
| Sandbox | Free play with C.A.R.L and the full ragdoll, blood and injury systems |
| The Lab | A small single-level testing area |
| Vertical Impact Test Site | Drops of up to 16 m, a ramp and props to play with |
| Tools | 6 weapons, each interacting with C.A.R.L differently, plus a physics gun to grab and throw him |
| Zombie mode | A simple wave-survival shooter, a preview of the gameplay beyond the sandbox |
The developer calls the demo feature-complete: it gets only small bug fixes. New features go to a private tester branch for supporters as the game heads for Early Access.
On a Mac, Chromebook or phone, or want it gore-free?
Project C.A.R.L needs Windows. For quick ragdoll fun anywhere, try Flop Lab, our own free physics game that runs in the browser: slingshot a jelly test dummy into bumpers, trampolines and glass, with a new Daily room every day.
Play Flop Lab free →Play Project C.A.R.L on Mac or Linux
There's no official Mac or Linux build, so these are unofficial workarounds that may or may not run well on your machine.
Mac (CrossOver or Whisky)
- Download and extract the .zip from the official page.
- In CrossOver choose Install → Install an unlisted application, or create a new bottle in Whisky, and point it at the game's .exe.
- Launch it from the bottle. Unity games usually start this way; if it's slow, lower the in-game quality settings.
Linux / Steam Deck (Proton)
- In Steam choose Add a Game → Add a Non-Steam Game and pick the game's .exe.
- In Properties → Compatibility, tick "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" and pick a Proton version.
Tips for the sandbox
- Start in the Vertical Impact Test Site. The 16 m drop and the ramp show off the ragdoll reactions best.
- Try every tool on the same pose. Each weapon has its own interaction system, so comparing them side by side is the fastest way to see what the simulation does.
- Use the physics gun for staging. Grab and position C.A.R.L before you test a drop or ramp run.
- Struggling with frame rate? The blood and injury simulation is heavy. Close background apps, update your GPU driver and lower the graphics settings.
- Report bugs on the Discord. The developer says they read feedback there and fix reported bugs.
Roadmap: Steam, Early Access and modding
The developer is working towards an Early Access release on Steam. The full game is planned to keep the sandbox and add more maps, toys and contraptions, plus real gameplay loops such as close-quarters combat, "Carl Fights" and minigames. Modding is planned for the Steam release and is locked in the demo. Builds beyond the demo are available through the developer's Patreon, linked from the official page.
The developer has also said openly that the game's code is written with AI help, while sound, art and models are made by people.
FAQ
Is Project C.A.R.L free?
The demo is free on itch.io. Newer test builds are for Patreon supporters, and the full game is planned for Steam.
Can I play it online or unblocked?
No. There's no official browser version, and online copies aren't from the developer. For ragdoll physics in a browser, try Flop Lab.
What does C.A.R.L stand for?
Clinical Assistant for Research and Learning, the lab test subject at the centre of the game.
Is it safe for kids?
No. It has detailed blood, injuries and guns. For a cartoon, gore-free alternative, Flop Lab works for all ages.
Is it the same as the 2022 "Project Carl" shooter?
No. There's an older 2D student shooter on itch.io with a similar name. The ragdoll sandbox people are searching for now is Project C.A.R.L by CarlRagdoll.
